In the next installment of the Cock Grease line we are trying out the Cock Grease X pomade. Back at Viva, Rea gave me a really cool discounted deal on these since I was reviewing them and buying all of them plus a grease rag at the same time. Thanks again Rea, I appreciate it!! Let’s see what’s up with the X.
It comes in the same 4oz stainless, slipcover tin as their Cock Grease No X does. The labels look very similar. They’re basically the same, just different colors. The label on the front looks a little bit smaller, but not much. This one has the same rooster in the center and says “Extra Stiff” on either side of him. Below him is “Cock Grease X” and “Keep it up all day” below that. The background colors have changed a little bit. These ones are green and yellow instead of black and yellow. The front label has a green border instead of a yellow one and has “X” on it as well.
Opening this one up you see a cream colored pomade instead of a yellow one like the No-X. I expected a green one, since the last one had a yellow label and was yellow. But a natural/cream color is cool too. It looks like it is going to be a pretty creamy pomade. The surface appears to have a grainy look to it. I’m not sure if the pomade will have a grainy feel to it or not though. I’m not sure about the scent on this one. I can’t place exactly what it smells like, but it has a slightly sweet smell to it. However, it’s more of a plant-like sweet smell not a sugary sweet smell. It also has kind of a powdery/floral undertone to it. Very hard to place the smell of this one. I’m not sure if I like it or not yet.
Just as I thought, it has a very creamy texture to it. It kind of similar to High Life light weight wise, but more of a greasy feel to it. And it does have a grainy look to it when you scoop it out also, but it doesn’t feel grainy at all. It’s really weird that it looks grainy but doesn’t feel grainy. In fact it feels the opposite, it’s very smooth and creamy to the touch. In your hands it gets a nice greasy feel to it while maintaining its creamy texture. The more you work it around in your hands it starts to get a slightly tacky feel to it.
This stuff goes in your hair really easily. Almost as easy as their No-X pomade does. I really like how easy it is to apply and work in with your hands. It has a really nice feel to it as you apply it to you hair. You can really run your hands all around your hair without much resistance. Which in turn allows you to work it in pretty well with just your hands.
The moment I grabbed my comb and started to run it through my hair I was really happy! It combs so nicely. It has a really smooth feel to it while maintaining some nice control as you’re combing. You’re able to comb back and forth, side to side quickly, really working the pomade in evenly. Now it’s not like combing Royal Crown Hair Dressing where you can comb super fast, it does has some resistance to it. But you don’t have to take your time combing either.
It has a nice medium hold to it, kind of along the lines of the old High Life Light or ATP. It didn’t give my hair a greasy or waxy look to it. My hair actually looked a little fluffy and natural looking with this stuff in it. I was a little surprised at that, especially since I put almost 2 whole fingerfulls in my hair. Most pomades give your hair the look of something being in it, but this one didn’t. It also doesn’t have too much shine to it. More of a natural shine like your hair would have on it’s own. Being such nice weather out right now this stuff held nicely all day long. It is finally fall out here in AZ when it’s supposed to be! The last few years have been summer then winter with practically no fall. So I am thoroughly enjoying the weather right now. It’s perfect for nice medium pomades like this one.
Not much of it came out of my hair overnight and in the shower the next morning, leaving me with a nice buildup. I only had to add about 3/4 of a fingerfull the next day. And this time with the build up my hair tool on the look of having pomade in it. My hair had a significant amount more shine to it the second day as well. Cock Grease X Pomade definitely gets better the more you use it. I really liked how it was the second day. The application, look, shine, hold, everything. I was able to get a little bit more height the second and third days using it. And I had much more control and hold the more I used it.
All in all Cock Grease X is a pomade that is a mist have in your collection. I was really pleased with it. It has a great texture, applies and combs really easily, makes your hair look great, holds well, recombs with ease, has a great buildup to it, and has a decent shine to it. The only thing I’m still not sure of is the scent. For one, I can’t place what the scent is, which is driving me nuts. And two, I’m not quite sure if I like the scent or not. But that’s a minor detail, because it’s not a very strong scent, and you can top it with a stronger scented light pomade of you want. So go buy a tin of this pomade straight away!
